About Me

Hi, I’m Nate Robs, and I design narrative. I grew up an RPG nerd. I always wanted to tell stories. I went to film school to learn every aspect of production, so I could write and direct films. After that I got heavily into animation and started my own motion graphics agency that’s been going strong for about a decade, producing content for some well-known brands. (See www.squareship.com)

We produced an animated YouTube series called Tinyverse to explain the mysteries of the universe through entertaining cartoons. Since then my focus has shifted back to games and narrative design. For the past several years I’ve immersed myself in the community, attending GDC and collaborating on projects. Here you’ll find examples of some of the work I’ve done on this front.

TINYVERSE: CATLORD CATASTROPHE

Unity Vertical Slice - (CMF funded)

A top-down puzzle comedy game, about chasing cats across the solar system. Based on the popular YouTube edutainment channel, you play as a pair of sidekicks using the 2 analog sticks to control each. Alan and Cephy, a transforming robot and a transdimensional cephalopod, do most of the heaving lifting, while Hero just kinda does his thing. The slacker genius doesn’t sweat the small stuff. He leaves that to you. He’s really more of an ideas guy. But hey, maybe you’ll learn something along the way.

DARK OCEAN

Ink + Unity

Grid-based, turn-based roguelite being developed in Unity. A casual, mobile tactics adventure, on a cosmic-fantasy planet at the end of time, where Humans are alien and immortal Elves guide the fate of their world. It’s a dungeon-crawler at heart that puts you on a journey and then asks you why you’re there. Built on Ink narrative scripting language. Authored levels in 16px tilemaps, with a ‘Dream’ feature that work like roguelike runs within the larger game. Check out the case study below to see progress.

TINYVERSE

YouTube Channel

Original IP developed with help from Ontario Creates. An animated YouTube edutainment channel with general interest videos about science, technology, history and nature. Developed scripts on a wide range of topics from relativity to crypto. As producer and creative director I led the team, generating research, directing art and animation, producing voiceover, editing and compositing, sourcing music, and whatever else needed to be done.

THE BONDED ONES

Conan Exiles Roleplay + Modding

Story Lead and later Server Owner for a Conan Exiles RP community. I created custom maps through the Unreal 4 devkit to weave a story through a dynamic world that changes over time. Introduced new mechanics, rules and systems to automate interactions between players. Scripted dungeons using a variety of tools and techniques to create environmental content. Shaped the server’s overall metaplot and worked with players to guide their stories, keeping true to the lore of Ron E. Howard and Funcom. To learn more, check out the case study below.

NARRATIVE WORK

Ink, Twine, Script, etc.

Over the years I’ve written scripts for everything from films to branded videos to tabletop role-playing games. My transition to games has been gradual over the past few years as I wrapped up some animation work. I’ve worked with Twine, Ink and Articy, and will soon post some examples. In the meantime here are some samples of scripts I've written. More works to come, so refresh often.
